Biological Mass Spectrometry: Research and Development

Dr. Liang Li, Professor of Chemistry and Canada Research Chair in Analytical Chemistry
Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G2G2, Canada

This short course will focus on the discussion of modern mass spectrometry (MS), particularly
electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) MS, for
biomolecule analysis.   It will start with an introduction to the ionization processes and
instrumentation related to ESI and MALDI MS.  The new research field of proteomics and
metabolomics will be briefly discussed, followed by the discussion of how MS can be used for
proteome and metabolome analysis.  Examples of proteomics and metabolomics applications in
bioscience and medical research will be given.  Several selected papers published in leading
journals will be discussed to illustrate how to carry out research and development in the area of
biological MS that would lead to the publication of high quality work.  Students are required to
read original publications.
