Graphene, the mother of all other graphitic carbons, has demonstrated exceptional physical properties such as high charge carrier mobility, room-temperature quantum Hall effect, good optical transparency and high mechanical and thermal stability, which lead to many prominent electronic applications. Yet, the future research of graphene calls for the efficient chemical synthesis of graphene at the different length and layer scales.
Here we introduce a novel carbon-rich precursor approach towards the fabrication of well-defined graphene and carbon materials with tailorability at the molecular level. This strategy can further establish the link between 2D (graphene) and 3D carbon materials through the controlled pyrolysis of precursors in confining template or carbonmesophase state. Therefore, this method stands in contrast to other chemical means of carbon synthesis in terms of its 1) size, shape and component fine control; 2) structural perfection and 3) feasible processability. Prominent applications have been achieved with using these graphene and carbon materials as well as their carbon-metal nanocomposite across the ranges of transparent electrode, catalysis, sensing, supercapacitors and batteries.
