Malodor pollution (unpleasant smell) has become a growing environmental issue in Korea, a country where residential area is in close vicinity of the pollution source. Among malodor substances are ammonia and alkyl amines, low molecular weight carboxylic acids, and carbonyls. These substances occur in ambient air at lower to sub parts per billion by volume. In this presentation, automated semi-continuous ambient air monitoring methods for malodor substances are introduced. The method for ammonia and alkyl amines(methyl, d-imethyl, tri-methyl) is based on liquid effluent diffusion scrubber(LEDS) coupled cation chromatography. The method for carboxylic acids (C1 ~C5) is based on LEDS coupled anion chromatography. Carbonyl method is based on LEDS coupled HPLC. Principles and experimental details of the method, and field measurement data will be presented.
