Abstract:
New methods for synthesis that result from the harnessing of reactive intermediates will be described. For example, thionium ions have been used to mediate the nucleophilic ortho-allylation of aryl sulfoxides in a metal-free process equivalent to C-H activation, and radical anions generated by electron-transfer to the ester carbonyl have been used in unprecedented C-C bond-forming reactions.
