1. Total syntheses of homochiral, bioactive natural products and their analogs with pharmaceutical potential.

2. Asymmetric synthesis using carbohydrates as diastereoselective auxiliaries and as enantioselective reagents.

3. Syntheses and biological evaluation of pseudosugar derivatives as glycosidase inhibitors with potential for AIDS chemotherapy.

4. Development of novel sugar-transition metal chemistry and its application to organic synthesis.
