报告人简介:
Marco Buongiorno Nardelli is Professor of Physics at NC State University and a Joint Faculty with the Computational Chemical Sciences group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at ORNL. His research is mainly focused on the application of first principles electronic structure techniques to the theoretical study of important aspects of the behavior of materials using high performance simulations
报告内容简介:
Today, mechanical engineers and materials scientists are called to address the greatest challenges of 21st century research and development: clean, safe and renewable energy; faster, smaller and more reliable electronics; smarter solutions for biomedical applications; revolutionary materials and designs for the aircrafts of the future. These challenges can be met only with the design and production of novel materials and nanostructures tailored to a specific task.
In this Seminar Prof. Nardelli will demonstrate the key role that high performance simulations play in the development of specifically designed nanoscale materials. In particular, he will discuss a few research avenues that we are exploring in my group at NCSU/ORNL: electromechanical coupling in carbon nanotubes for deformation sensing, graphene-based electronic devices for RF applications, polymer composites for ultra-high energy storage and design of novel molecular systems for photovoltaic applications.
All these results, based on cutting edge first principles simulations, indicate that the theoretical design of nanomaterials is an essential component of our drive towards the novel, smarter materials for 21st century applications.
