Treating skin cancer with light? Not a fallacy anymore!Professor Pradip Mascharak(UC. Santa Cruz, Chemistry and Biochemistry)时间:12月23日 下午 4点A few lines on the talk:During the past two decades, the connection between skin cancer and long exposure to sunlight has been established quite firmly. The recent changes in climates related to “global warming” and identification of “ozone holes”further add to this concern. Interestingly, many skin cancer patients are treated with light of selected frequencies following administration of topical or systemic drugs (often termed as Photodynamic Therapy). We have recently designed and synthesized several molecules that can selectively deliver high doses of nitric oxide to malignant sites under the total control of light exposure and cause cell destruction. These unusual nitric oxide donors are ideal candidates for Photodynamic Therapy for skin cancer. In addition, they can be employed to combatother localized cancers such as prostate and breast cancer. This talk will include discussions on the fundamentals and potentials of this intriguing treatment of cancer with light and highlight an unconventional use of nitric oxide, a molecule with multiple roles in biology. Some Recent Publications:1. Mascharak was born in Jaipur, India, in 1953. He received his Ph. D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1979. In the same year, he joined the research group of Professor Richard Holm at Stanford University and later moved to Harvard University. He later worked with Professor Steven J. Lippard at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for two years before joining the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), in late 1984. He is currently a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCSC. His major focus of research includes (a) modeling of active sites of metalloenzymes, (b) catalysts for “Green Chemistry” and (c) syntheses of photoactive NO donors drugs. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Health (NIH).
