Electrochemistry of supramolecular systems, host-guest complexation and molecular recognition, functionalized dendrimers and metal nanoparticles。 担任过Langmuir (1995-1997), Supramolecular Chemistry (1992至今) and Journal of Supramolecular Chemistry (1997-2003)的编委。 NIH Study Section on Nanotechnology in Medicine的常委。 Cucurbit[n]urils: A New Class of Molecular Receptors with Unusual Binding PropertiesThe cucurbit[n]urils are readily prepared by condensation of glycoluril with formaldehyde in acidic medium. This reaction yields a complex mixture of products from which it is possible to isolate the hexameric (CB6), heptameric (CB7) and octameric (CB8) cucurbiturils, among many other compounds. The cucurbit[n]urils are macrocyclic structures in which n glycoluril units, linked by methylenes, form container-shaped molecules with a rigid and well-defined cavity. The two identical cavity portals are lined by the carbonyl groups of the glycoluril units. The cucurbituril hosts from highly stable inclusion complexes in which the included guest (ideally a hydrophobic cation) develops hydrophobic contacts with the inner surface of the cavity and ion-dipole interactions with the carbonyl oxygens on the portals. In this lecture, I will focus on the properties of the inclusion complexes formed between the hosts CB7 and CB8 and two classes of redox active guests, viologen and ferrocene derivatives, highlighting the outstanding levels of binding affinity and selectivity that can be reached, particularly in the case of the ferrocene derivatives.
