The Center for Chemistry of High-Performance & Novel Materials at Zhejiang University was initiated in 2009 by Professor Xiaogang Peng and several other PIs in various departments. In 2011, the then President of the University (President Wei Yang) selected top ten priorities for academic development at Zhejiang University, and this center was among the fortunate list. In 2014, the President of Zhejiang University (President Jianghua Lin) decided to further support the Center as an interdisciplinary team in the field of materials chemistry, physics, and devices.
The greatest challenge for the world, especially for the highly populated countries like China and India, is sustainability. From scientific perspective, this challenge is equivalent to “how to understand, discover, and apply materials without leaving negative effects to the mother nature“. Chemistry of materials is going to play a central role in discovering new materials as well as removing negative effects to environment. Without understanding the principles of applications of materials, the power of materials chemistry is limited. With all these consensuses, the scientists in this center are diligently working as a cohesive force and aiming to mostly optical, optoelectronic, catalytic, and biomedical materials at the current stage. In terms of form of materials, we are focusing on “nanocrystals and related materials” at present.
